Spiced Toasted Walnuts

Ingredients:
1 egg white
2 cups walnut halves and pieces
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Preparation:
Combine sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Set aside.

Beat egg white with 1 tablespoon water. Stir in nuts. Sprinkle spice mixture over walnuts and stir until well coated. Spread nuts in a buttered shallow pan such as a cookie sheet. Bake nuts for 30 minutes at 300° stirring 2 or 3 times. Separate nuts before they cool.

History:
Mother’s former neighbor, Marge Buchanan, provided the above recipe. Marge and Leonard moved to a house more accommodating to their son’s injuries. Don Buchanan broke his neck body surfing at the Wedge in Corona Del Mar when he was 17 years old – in 1965.
